Smoking may cause ischemia (lack of oxygen and blood flow to the heart muscle) by transiently decreasing the diameter of the coronary arteries. When arteries that are already narrowed by atherosclerotic deposits become narrowed even further, blood flow to the heart muscle may be reduced enough to cause angina or a heart attack. When smokers with angina exert themselves, they get chest pain sooner than they would otherwise, because smoking reduces the amount of oxygen to the heart and also makes the heart beat faster. So, ironically, the heart’s demand for oxygen increases and the supply of oxygen decreases. Smoking blocks the increased blood flow that normally occurs with exercise and reduces the effectiveness of some anti-anginal drugs. Even in the absence of symptoms, studies have shown that there is evidence of myocardial ischemia during smoking. In some cases, smoking can cause coronary arteries without atherosclerosis to go into spasm and narrow enough to cut off blood flow to the heart muscle.The heart and coronary arteries are not the only cardiovascular targets of smoking damage. Smoking is a major risk factor for peripheral vascular disease (atherosclerotic narrowing of the blood vessels that carry blood to your arm and leg muscles). The consequences may range from the exertion-related pain of claudication (see page 98) to the actual destruction of skin or muscle tissue supplied by blocked arteries. When severe, this condition may require operation or amputation. Women who smoke and take birth control pills place themselves at higher risk for another serious vascular problem—stroke.Smoking is the main cause of chronic lung diseases such as chronic bronchitis and emphysema, which put an additional strain on the heart.*230\252\8*

* Include more oily fish, nuts, seeds and oils in your diet
The essential fatty acids in these foods are important for the prevention of heart disease. The fish oils help to lower cholesterol, thin the blood and lessen the risk of narrowing of the arteries. Walnuts have been shown to be helpful in preventing heart attacks, again due to the essential fatty acid content. A study of 26,500 members of a religious sect called Seventh Day Adventists, who do not drink or smoke, found that those who ate a handful of nuts at least five times a week had half the heart problems of those who rarely ate any nuts. This underlines the crucial importance of diet in preventing heart disease.
* Eat more fresh vegetables and fruit and also dried fruit
Fibre found in potatoes, carrots, apples, beans and oats binds up the cholesterol and carries it out of the body. Vitamin С found in fruit and vegetables is important because low levels of vitamin С have been linked to increased levels of cholesterol.
* Eat more soya
Soya beans have been found to help control cholesterol levels so should be included in the diet in the form of tofu, soya milk, miso, tempeh and tamari (wheat-free soy sauce made in the traditional way). Soya beans contain more protein than milk without the saturated fat or cholesterol. They are the only beans considered to be a complete protein because they contain all eight essential amino acids. Soya is also high in essential fatty acids. The role of soya in preventing and treating chronic disease has become so important that there is an annual four-day international conference devoted just to soya. The conference, hosted in Brussels in September 1996, with nearly eighty speakers from around the world, focused on the role of soya in reducing heart disease and cancer. And papers were presented on soya and hormones, the menopause and osteoporosis.
* Exercise regularly
Take brisk walks and get your heart beating fasting than it usually does. As well as keeping the cardiovascular system in good condition, exercise also seems to help raise HDL (the ‘good’ cholesterol) and lower LDL (the ‘bad’ cholesterol).
* Look at your vitamins
A very exciting confirmation of the link between good nutrition and heart disease came from a study published in The Lancet in March 1996. Scientists from Cambridge University and Papworth Hospital found that taking a daily dose of vitamin E reduced the risk of having a heart attack by an astonishing 75 per cent. An eighteen-month trial involved 2000 patients with coronary arteriosclerosis (fatty deposits in the arteries). Half of the patients were given the vitamin E supplement with their regular medication and half took the placebo with their regular medication.
The number of heart attacks in the group which took the vitamin E was a quarter of those taking the dummy pills. Those given the supplement appeared to be at no greater risk of having a heart attack than normal, healthy men and women of the same age with no heart problems.
According to Professor Morris Brown of Cambridge University, quoted in the Journal of the Institute for Optimum Nutrition: ‘This is even more exciting than aspirin. Most people in our study were already taking aspirin. The average benefit from taking aspirin is in the order of 25 to 40 per cent reduction. Vitamin E reduces the risk of heart attack by a massive 75 per cent.’
Professor Brown then goes on to say that he would not suggest that people should stop taking aspirin. Why not? He just suggests that they take the vitamin E as well. He added ‘It would be irresponsible for us to recommend it freely to those without heart disease.’ Is he actually suggesting you wait until you have narrowing of the arteries or a heart attack and then start the vitamin E?
With results like these on a large-scale double-blind controlled trial, doctors should be recommending what to eat and what to take to keep us well. But results like this and others before get stuck in the academic literature without being put to any practical use. Several other previous studies in fact have indicated that vitamin E is important for heart health – low blood levels of this vitamin have been linked to heart attack risk.
So increase your vitamin E intake from foods such as olives, olive oil, avocado and tuna and take it in a supplement form
* Make sure your mineral levels are good
It has been found that magnesium-rich foods seem to protect against coronary disease. A ten-year study of 2000 men showed that those who had heart attacks had significantly less magnesium in their blood than those who did not. Also analysis of three other trials has shown a significant reduction in deaths by treating heart disease patients with magnesium. Magnesium-rich foods are cereals such as wheat, oats and rye.

The art of the skilled hypnotherapist or other health practitioner trained in the use of hypnosis is a far cry from the parlour tricks portrayed by Hollywood. Hypnosis is considered a legitimate therapy, with a number of well-documented applications. By almost all estimates, virtually everyone is capable of being hypnotised, though some may be more suggestible than others. Two schools of thought exist as to the best use of hypnosis to help someone quit smoking.

Dr Herbert Spiegel, a New York psychiatrist with an excellent reputation in the field of hypnotherapy, developed one recognised approach. In a session utilising his technique, the subject sits in a comfortable chair and, with eyes closed, tries to roll the eyes up as though looking up into the head. The therapist then tells the subject to imagine an arm being very light and capable of floating. Though in a trance, the subject remains conscious of what is happening.

The next step is to imprint a positive message in the mind. “Cigarettes are poison to your body.” “You owe your body respect and protection.” “You need your body to live.”

The subject next learns self-hypnosis and is instructed to use the technique, which lasts about 20 seconds, whenever the urge to smoke comes on, usually about 10 times a day. A card reminds the subject of the positive messages about smoking and the body.

The entire process takes about 45 minutes. For many former smokers, it’s the last time they ever wanted to smoke, and they’ve never lit another cigarette.

More typical is the hypnotherapist who uses a straightforward approach. My good friend Rick Reinert, a well-known animation artist and a smoker for 36 years, says that after just one session it was as if he never had smoked. He walked out of the office without any cravings and hasn’t smoked another cigarette since.

I mention Rick specifically because I really thought he would never quit smoking. A cigarette burned at his drawing table or desk almost constantly, and his voice has been permanently lowered by the smoke. He learned about the hypnotist from a friend who swore the method made quitting a snap. Rick had wanted to quit for years, and his family and I had urged him to do so again and again. But he feared withdrawal. When he decided to go to the hypnotherapist, he threw his last pack of cigarettes into the bin as he entered the elevator going to her office.

In the approach that worked so well for Rick, the therapist places the subject in a trance and records the session. Positive messages are implanted in the mind. The subject receives the tape and is encouraged to listen to it whenever cravings develop. A follow-up session is included in the fee if it is necessary. Rick didn’t need the follow-up and never even bothered to listen to the tape. He never wanted another cigarette. A truly amazing case history, but not an isolated one.

Rick had something special going for him. He really wanted to quit, and he really believed that the hypnosis was just what he’d been waiting for to give him the assistance he needed. Another friend of mine did not fare so well.

Dan Lescoe didn’t really want to quit, and he thought the idea of going to a hypnotist was “a crock”. Still, friends and family urged him to quit, and Dan says that he knows it would be better if he didn’t smoke. On the other hand, he justifies his smoking by pointing out that he smokes only a half-pack a day, and he often makes it through a whole weekend without lighting a single cigarette.

The outcome of his experience was predictable. Dan went into the session and came out a smoker. “I might go back,” he says, “when I really want to quit.”

The costs vary for hypnosis sessions but are typically less than one would pay for commercial stop-smoking programs. The chances for success will be much better for those who really want to quit, who believe this will work, and who follow the coping strategies I’ve mapped out in the coming pages.

If you’re interested in this approach you can get a list of hypnotists in your area from the Australian Society of Clinical Hypnotherapists or the Australian Hypnotherapists Association, listed in the Yellow Pages.

You might wish to speak with two or three practitioners before deciding which would be the best for you. Perhaps they can answer specific questions you might have.

Those who succeed with the assistance of hypnosis have two things in common. First there’s a real desire to quit smoking, a true commitment. Second there’s a belief that this approach will be just the ticket to making that desire a reality.

When acupuncture was first introduced to the Western world by Oriental practitioners in the early 1970s, medical authorities scoffed. The idea of inducing anaesthesia, lessening pain and treating illnesses by inserting needles into specified points of the body was foreign to our way of thinking, and not easy to accept. In the intervening years, however, this approach has been shown to have widespread value in a number of applications including weight loss and cigarette cessation.

Either a straight needle or a staple is inserted into either the nose or the ear to effect a lessening in the desire to smoke. Different practitioners’ techniques will vary enormously. Success rates, as usual, are exaggerated but have been documented to a certain extent.

Does it work for everyone? No. Could it work for you? Perhaps. Once again, you must really want to quit. And for the method to work best, you must believe in it. To help ensure effectiveness, most practitioners instruct subjects in coping techniques, since withdrawal will be alleviated but not eliminated in most cases.

If interested, you can find practitioners listed in your area’s Yellow Pages under acupuncture. It definitely is not quackery, and it may be just what you need.
